UNN Sued Over Peter Obi’s Academic Records

Abayomi Arabambi has commenced proceedings against the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and its Vice-Chancellor over the institution’s alleged failure to release academic records relating to Peter Obi.

The action, filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja as FHC/ABJ/CS/2144/2026, seeks orders compelling the university to respond to requests made under the Freedom of Information Act 2011.

Arabambi is asking for certified records connected with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy said to have been awarded in 1984, as well as supporting institutional records. He alleges that earlier written requests were not answered with either the documents sought or a formal statutory reason for refusing disclosure.

The suit has not determined the authenticity or otherwise of any academic qualification. Its immediate legal issue concerns access to information and the alleged statutory obligations of the university.

That distinction will be important as the case progresses. The court may have to examine whether the requested records fall within the FOI regime, whether any exemptions apply and whether mandamus is appropriate to compel a response.
