The Federal Government has approved a monthly transport allowance of ₦70,000 for federal public service workers for six months, beginning in November 2026, following negotiations with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
The agreement emerged from a conciliation meeting in Abuja involving government representatives and organised labour. The discussions addressed workers’ welfare, outstanding allowances and disagreements over implementation of the national minimum wage.
Under the agreement, the transport support will run for six months. The government also agreed to pay outstanding peculiar-allowance arrears dating from May 2026 in three equal monthly instalments beginning in November.
Health workers are expected to receive 19 months of outstanding allowances within three months, starting in December.
However, the government and labour representatives did not reach agreement on the effective date for implementing the national minimum wage. The parties agreed to establish a wage negotiation committee and begin discussions immediately.
The measures offer temporary financial support to federal workers confronting rising transport and living costs. However, the transport allowance is a time-limited intervention and should not be confused with a permanent increase in the national minimum wage.
The parties are expected to reconvene in one month to assess implementation of the agreements.
