An Aba South Magistrate’s Court in Abia State has convicted and sentenced Iheanacho Emenike, 65, after he pleaded guilty to charges bordering on impersonation, obtaining money by false pretence and the use of a purported Nigerian Bar Association seal.
The case, Commissioner of Police v. Iheanacho Emenike, was heard before His Worship Erinma Maduagwu at Court 1 of the Aba South Magistrate’s Court.
According to the charge, Emenike allegedly presented himself as a legal practitioner known as “E.U. Iheanacho Esq.” and obtained ₦500,000 from Onuoha Chinasa on the representation that he would prepare an Irrevocable Power of Attorney for her.
He was also charged with using a purported NBA seal bearing number SCN076872 with the intention that it be acted upon as genuine.
The court sentenced him to one year on the impersonation count, two years on the second count and three years on the third count. The sentences are to run concurrently, leaving him with an effective custodial term of three years without an option of fine.
The conviction was announced by the NBA Aba Branch Anti-Fake Lawyers Committee, whose Chairman, Uchenna Ejiogu, described the outcome as significant to efforts to protect the integrity of the legal profession.
The prosecution was conducted by U.E. Emmanuel, Legal Officer of the Area Command, Aba.
