The Borno State Police Command has recovered an unexploded hand grenade from a drainage slab in the Moduganari area of Maiduguri, averting what could have posed a significant security risk to residents.
According to Punch, the suspicious explosive device was discovered on Saturday after the police received a report from members of the public about an object believed to be an unexploded ordnance.
In a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Nahum Daso, the report was received at approximately 12:40 p.m. on August 15, 2026.
Following the directive of the Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, operatives attached to the Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) Base 13, Maiduguri, were immediately deployed to the scene.
The officers successfully recovered the unexploded hand grenade and secured it for further examination.
According to Punch, police authorities have commenced an investigation to determine the origin of the explosive and the circumstances surrounding its discovery.
The Commissioner of Police commended residents for promptly reporting the suspicious object, describing public vigilance as a critical component of effective community policing and public safety.
The Command also advised members of the public not to touch, move or attempt to tamper with any suspected explosive devices. Instead, residents were urged to immediately alert the nearest security agency whenever such objects are discovered.
The Borno State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, while encouraging continued cooperation between residents and law enforcement authorities in maintaining security across the state.
