The family of late Nigerian musician Mohbad has confirmed that the Inspector-General of Police approved its request for a renewed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the singer’s death.
Mohbad died on September 12, 2023, in circumstances that subsequently generated widespread public concern, protests and calls for a transparent investigation.
According to the family’s lawyer, Oladayo Ogungbe, the family submitted its petition to the Inspector-General of Police on April 14, 2026. The petition was formally received at Force Headquarters in Abuja on May 7.
The family reportedly raised concerns over what it described as inconsistencies and unresolved issues in the earlier investigation and asked for a comprehensive forensic reconstruction of events surrounding Mohbad’s death.
Following the IGP’s approval, the petition was forwarded to the Lagos State Police Command. The matter was subsequently assigned to officers of the Special Enquiry Bureau for further investigation.
The family’s representatives have already met the newly assigned investigative team and say they remain willing to provide documents, witnesses and other information that could assist the investigation.
The latest development is particularly important because it comes shortly after the Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed a separate suit seeking to compel the police to conduct another investigation.
That action, filed by the Registered Trustees of Break the Silence Foundation, was dismissed on September 25, 2026. Mohbad’s family says it neither instituted nor authorised that suit and has urged the public not to confuse the judgment with its own petition to the police.
The family maintains that the dismissal therefore did not terminate the investigation approved by the IGP.
The renewed police process could now revisit forensic evidence, medical records, statements previously obtained from witnesses and other circumstances surrounding the singer’s death.
The family says it does not want the investigation tried in the media but expects an independent and credible process capable of establishing what happened.
