Suspected Terrorists Abduct 14 Students and Teacher in Niger State

Suspected terrorists have abducted 14 students of an Islamic school and their teacher in Tungan-Bako village, Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State, after invading a farm where the pupils were helping their teacher harvest maize.

The incident occurred at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 31, 2026, near Pandogari, according to information confirmed by the Niger State Police Command.

The victims, who attend an Islamiya school, had reportedly accompanied their teacher, popularly known as a Mallam, to his farm when armed men stormed the property and took them away.

The abduction has renewed concerns about the vulnerability of children and rural communities to armed attacks, particularly in areas where farming activities require residents to work in isolated locations.

Police Confirm 14 Victims, Dismiss Earlier Reports of 50

The Police Public Relations Officer of the Niger State Command, Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident on Monday, November 2, while clarifying the number of people taken by the attackers.

According to the police, 14 students were abducted, contrary to earlier reports suggesting that as many as 50 pupils had been seized.

In his account, Abiodun stated that suspected bandits invaded Tungan-Bako village at about 12:30 p.m. on October 31 and abducted people working on the farm.

He further confirmed that the victims included students of an Islamic school who had accompanied their teacher to harvest maize.

The police spokesperson said joint security rescue efforts were ongoing and that further developments would be communicated.

The clarification is important because inflated casualty figures can create unnecessary panic and complicate the dissemination of reliable information during security emergencies. Nevertheless, the confirmed abduction of 14 schoolchildren and their teacher remains a grave incident.

Families Await Rescue as Security Concerns Deepen

The circumstances surrounding the attack have drawn attention to the risks faced by rural residents who depend on farming for their livelihoods.

The incident also raises serious concerns about the safety of children outside formal school environments. The pupils were reportedly assisting their teacher with agricultural work when the attackers struck.

For the affected families, the immediate concern is the safe recovery of their children and the teacher. The police have confirmed that a joint security operation has been deployed, although no official confirmation of a successful rescue was available in the reports reviewed for this publication.

The incident also reinforces the need for sustained security presence in vulnerable communities, intelligence-led operations and improved protection for residents engaged in farming and other essential activities.

As rescue efforts continue, families and residents will be looking to the relevant authorities for concrete action and regular, verified updates.
