The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of Adeniyi Adeyemi following his arraignment on charges connected with the controversial Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council.
Prosecutors accuse Adeyemi of presenting himself as Director-General of the purported council even though the Presidency maintains that the organisation was never established or authorised by President Bola Tinubu.
He pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The allegations include forgery and impersonation and centre on documents purportedly used to present the organisation as a legitimate presidential body.
Authorities allege that some of those documents contained representations suggesting presidential approval and enabled the organisation to interact with genuine federal government institutions.
What makes the case particularly striking is the extent to which the purported organisation allegedly penetrated government systems.
Documents previously reviewed by PREMIUM TIMES indicated that communications from the organisation were processed by institutions including the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation.
The body reportedly secured office space and pursued the opening of government-related accounts at the Central Bank of Nigeria. The controversy intensified after reports that approximately ₦1.3 billion had appeared as an allocation connected with the purported council.
The prosecution alleges that these developments were achieved through fraudulent representations and forged documentation. Adeyemi, however, has disputed the accusation that the organisation was fictitious and has maintained that he followed official procedures.
His arraignment came after an earlier period in which the court ordered his arrest following repeated failure to appear for proceedings.
No public official has been convicted or formally found to have collaborated with the alleged scheme.
The case now places two distinct issues before public scrutiny: whether the prosecution can prove that Adeyemi deliberately created or operated an unauthorised government body, and how federal verification systems allegedly allowed such an organisation to advance so far before its legal status was challenged.Related Story: Adeyemi Rights Suit Stalls Over Service Defect
