The deceased was identified in the police statement as Amos Onwe Ubochi, although earlier accounts referred to him as Chief Onwe Ubochi.
According to Naija News, the victim was reportedly attacked while returning home after attending a gathering where prayers were offered for Chief Tochukwu Ogalagu, the All Progressives Grand Alliance candidate for the Ebonyi/Ohaukwu Federal Constituency in the 2027 general election.
Reports alleged that the assailants waylaid the elderly man on his way home, killed him and abandoned his body near a stream.

The incident reportedly occurred on August 17, 2026, while the body was discovered the following day.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Joshua Ukandu, the Command confirmed that Ubochi left his residence on August 17 but did not return.
Police operatives reportedly visited the scene after receiving information that his lifeless body had been found along a bush path within the community.
The body was evacuated to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, where he was confirmed dead.
The Police Command said a comprehensive investigation had commenced to determine the circumstances surrounding the killing and identify those responsible.

It assured residents that every necessary step would be taken to uncover the facts of the case and bring the perpetrators to justice.
The Command also appealed to members of the public with useful information to assist investigators by reporting to the appropriate authorities.
Although reports linked the killing to the political prayer gathering, the police statement did not confirm a political motive. The circumstances and motive remain under investigation.
