The dismantling of four methamphetamine laboratories allegedly linked to Mexican cartels has drawn international attention to attempts by organised criminal networks to establish drug-production operations in Nigeria.

The United States commended the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency during a visit by Michael Gonzales, a senior American narcotics and law-enforcement official, to the agency’s Abuja headquarters on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.

According to TheCable, Gonzales praised the agency’s investigations and cooperation with international partners.

Facilities Discovered Across Four States

NDLEA Chairman Mohamed Buba Marwa said the operations involved laboratories in Ogun, Oyo, Enugu and Ebonyi states.

He reported the arrest of suspected Mexican specialists and Nigerian collaborators in connection with facilities in Ogun and Oyo.

Marwa described the discoveries as evidence of a coordinated effort to establish manufacturing operations, rather than isolated drug-trafficking incidents.

Gonzales warned that enforcement pressure on cartels in the Western Hemisphere could encourage criminal networks to seek alternative routes through Africa and other regions.

The four laboratory busts formed part of operations during the year; they were not announced as four raids carried out on a single day.

Enugu Case Shows Scale of Investigation

In an earlier official statement, NDLEA said it uncovered a laboratory in Eziama community, Obeagu, Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State, following months of intelligence gathering.

The agency identified two defendants as Chukwu Obumneme Christopher and Chukwu Georginus Monday.

They were arraigned before Justice Mabel Taiye Segun-Bello of the Federal High Court in Enugu on charges involving alleged conspiracy, management and financing of a drug-trafficking organisation, and possession of precursor chemicals.

Investigators reported finding reactors, distillation equipment and substantial quantities of chemicals allegedly intended for methamphetamine production.

The agency’s September statement listed October 21, 2026, for trial. That scheduling announcement does not establish what occurred in court on the date.

Marwa Seeks Continued Cooperation

Marwa urged the United States to sustain support for forensic investigations, training and equipment.

He also warned that drug proceeds could support other criminal activities, strengthening the case for investigations that follow both narcotics and associated financial networks.

The allegations against individual defendants remain subject to judicial determination.
