LP Chieftain Sues for Peter Obi’s Academic Records

Labour Party chieftain Abayomi Arabambi has instituted proceedings at the Federal High Court in Abuja seeking access to records relating to Peter Obi’s academic credentials.

Court documents reported over the weekend show that Arabambi is seeking orders compelling the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, to respond to requests for certified records relating to Obi’s Bachelor of Arts degree.

Other reports indicate that separate proceedings have also targeted the West African Examinations Council and National Youth Service Corps over records allegedly connected with Obi’s credentials.

The applications were reportedly brought under the Freedom of Information Act following alleged failures by the institutions to provide the requested information.

No finding has been made that Obi’s credentials are invalid. The substantive legal issue is whether the institutions are under a duty to disclose the particular documents requested and, if so, the extent to which any statutory exemptions or privacy interests may apply.
