Oyo State, Nigeria, 7 October 2026. A father, mother and their four children were allegedly murdered in an attack police say followed a dispute involving a damaged mobile phone.

An entire family of six, including four children, was allegedly murdered in Oloba Village, Lagelu Local Government Area of Oyo State, in a crime that has raised disturbing questions about the escalation of personal disputes into deadly violence.

The victims were identified as Ifeanyi Chukwu, his wife and their four children.

According to the Oyo State Police Command, the family was attacked at home on 22 September 2026.

Three suspects have since been arrested in connection with the killings.

Details of the case were reported by Premium Times on 7 October 2026.

A Family Home Becomes a Crime Scene

According to police, the suspects allegedly entered the family’s residence and stole property, including ₦200,000, a motorcycle and other equipment.

The attack subsequently turned fatal.

Police alleged that the father was shot, the mother suffered fatal injuries and the children were killed.

The victims’ bodies were reportedly disposed of in a nearby river.

The account has generated particular concern because four children were among those killed.

Three Suspects Arrested

The police identified the suspects as Hammed Akinbami, Ojo Akinbami and Padonu Edward.

Their arrests followed intelligence received by investigators on 2 October 2026.

During questioning and subsequent interviews with journalists, the suspects reportedly provided accounts of their alleged involvement.

However, their explanations of what motivated the attack differed.

  • Was a Damaged Phone Behind the Killings?

One of the suspects, Hammed Akinbami, reportedly claimed that a dispute involving a damaged mobile phone triggered his decision to organise the attack.

He alleged that the disagreement had occurred approximately four months earlier and that community elders had intervened.

According to his account, he subsequently recruited others to retaliate against the family.

Another suspect offered a different explanation, suggesting that he had initially been told the group intended to recover money.

These conflicting accounts leave important questions about the motive and planning of the attack.

The alleged phone dispute remains a suspect’s explanation, not a judicially established motive.

Police Recover Weapons and Other Evidence

Following the arrests, detectives visited the scene and recovered several items believed to be connected to the attack.

The recovered exhibits reportedly included a Boxer motorcycle, a locally made gun, two cutlasses and a club.

The police also documented the crime scene as part of their investigation.

According to the police spokesperson, Ayanlade Olushola, the remains of the mother had been recovered as of the 7 October report.

Efforts were continuing to retrieve the bodies of the other victims for autopsy and burial.

The police indicated that the suspects and case file would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and legal action.

Four Children Denied Their Future

The deaths of the four children make the tragedy particularly painful.

Children depend on adults for protection, care and safety.

In this case, the family’s home, which should have offered security, became the scene of an alleged violent attack.

The killings also raise serious concerns about the consequences of unresolved disputes, criminal retaliation and the vulnerability of families in communities where access to timely security intervention may be limited.

For the surviving relatives, the loss extends beyond the death of six people.

It is the destruction of an entire household.

The Legal Questions

  • Under Nigerian criminal law, allegations involving intentional killing, armed robbery and participation in a coordinated violent attack carry serious consequences.
  • However, the prosecution must establish the relevant offences through admissible evidence.
  • Confessions, where relied upon, must satisfy applicable legal requirements, and the defendants retain the presumption of innocence until proven guilty.
  • Investigators must also establish the circumstances of each death and the individual role allegedly played by each suspect.

A Community Awaits Justice

The killings have left a deeply troubling question about how a dispute reportedly involving a mobile phone could escalate into the alleged destruction of an entire family.

While police investigations continue, the priority must remain the recovery of the victims’ remains, preservation of evidence and lawful prosecution of anyone found responsible.

For the relatives of Ifeanyi Chukwu, his wife and their four children, justice cannot restore the lives lost.

But a thorough investigation and fair judicial process can help establish the truth and ensure accountability.
