Lawyer Moves Toward Guilty Plea in Hurricane Fraud Case

Richard William Huye III, formerly associated with Texas law firm McClenny Moseley and Associates, is facing a federal charge of conspiracy to commit wire fraud arising from insurance claims after Hurricane Ida.

Federal court records indicate that Huye is scheduled for a September 28 rearraignment hearing, a procedure frequently associated with a defendant changing an earlier plea as part of a negotiated resolution.

Authorities allege that the broader scheme involved questionable arrangements for obtaining and controlling insurance claims belonging to Louisiana homeowners after the 2021 hurricane.

The case has particular significance for the legal profession because lawyers occupy fiduciary positions when dealing with disaster victims, settlement funds and insurance proceeds.

Criminal allegations involving legal practitioners also engage disciplinary rules independently of criminal proceedings. A lawyer may therefore face professional consequences even where separate questions of criminal guilt must still be proved or admitted in court.
