The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Calabar Branch, (The Doyen Bar) has called on telecommunication companies operating in Nigeria to uphold professionalism, transparency, and strict compliance with the law in their dealings with consumers.
The call was made during the branch’s weekly public enlightenment radio programme, “The Court Room,” which aired on Sunday, March 8, 2026. The episode focused on the topic “Rights of Telecommunication Consumers in Nigeria.”
Speaking as the Guest Speaker, Namso Jeremiah, Esq, emphasized that telecom operators must adhere to regulatory and legal standards designed to protect consumers.
He noted that transparency in billing, quality of service, and effective customer complaint mechanisms are not merely ethical expectations but legal obligations imposed on service providers by the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003, the Federal Competition and Consumers Protection Act, 2018, and the Consumers Code of Practice Regulations, 2007.

Jeremiah also urged consumers to make lawful and responsible use of telecommunication services.
According to him, while consumers are entitled to fair treatment and protection under the law, they must equally ensure that their usage of telecom services complies with applicable regulations and contractual obligations.
He further encouraged consumers to utilize established channels of redress when grievances arise, stressing that lawful complaint mechanisms such as customer care platforms, regulatory bodies, and dispute resolution procedures exist to ensure accountability and fairness in the telecommunications sector.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the NBA Calabar Branch (The Doyen Bar), Enome Amatey, Esq, reaffirmed the branch’s unwavering commitment to public enlightenment.
He assured members of the public that the Doyen Bar will continue to provide platforms for educating citizens on their rights and responsibilities in critical sectors of the national economy.

Amatey noted that the initiative aligns with the broader mandate of the Nigerian Bar Association to promote legal awareness, strengthen public confidence in lawful processes, and uphold the rule of law across the country.
“The Doyen Bar remains steadfast in its responsibility to enlighten the public on issues that affect their daily lives.
Through programmes such as The Court Room, we will continue to engage experts and stakeholders in discussions that deepen public understanding of legal rights and civic responsibilities,” he said.
The public enlightenment programme forms part of the Doyen Bar’s ongoing efforts to bridge the knowledge gap between the law and society, ensuring that citizens are better informed about their rights while encouraging institutions to operate within the bounds of the law.
