The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria has demanded the removal of restraints allegedly placed on businessman Ufoma Joseph Immanuel while he receives medical treatment under custody in Lagos.
HURIWA said Immanuel had earlier been transferred to a hospital following a Federal High Court order but was subsequently allegedly handcuffed to his hospital bed and denied reasonable access to family members.
The organisation has called on the Nigerian Correctional Service to explain the legal and medical justification for the restraints.
It also asked the Comptroller-General of Corrections to investigate the conduct of officers supervising the detainee and urged the Minister of Interior to ensure compliance with the relevant court order.
HURIWA expressly said its intervention was not about determining Immanuel’s guilt or innocence, which remains the responsibility of the court.
The controversy raises broader questions about detainees’ dignity, medical treatment and the extent to which security considerations may justify physical restraint while a person is hospitalised.
