At least 24 suspected bandits were reportedly killed on Tuesday after a joint security operation foiled an alleged attempt to abduct residents of Gidan Bawa Village in Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State.

According to Zagazola Makama, the operation followed intelligence indicating that armed men were preparing to attack the community.

The report stated that about 40 suspected bandits, allegedly loyal to a bandit leader identified as Isiya Kwashen Garwa, planned to invade the village and abduct residents, particularly women and children.

According to Metro Daily, the planned attack was allegedly intended to mirror an earlier mass abduction reported in Woro Community, Kwara State.

Acting on the intelligence, operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) reportedly mobilised personnel of the Katsina Community Watch Corps, the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) and troops of the Nigerian Army to intercept the attackers.

A gun battle reportedly ensued, during which 24 suspected bandits were killed, while several abducted villagers were rescued.

The report also stated that 19 stolen cattle were recovered during the operation, while security operatives launched efforts to track down fleeing members of the armed group.

As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian Army and the Department of State Services had not issued an official statement confirming the reported casualty figures or details of the operation.
