The Sokoto State Government has donated more than ₦100 million and 408 bags of assorted food items to families affected by banditry and a boat accident in three communities.
According to Channels Television, the intervention covered Dinawa and Birjingo villages in Wurno Local Government Area and Gorau community in Goronyo Local Government Area.
The assistance was presented during condolence visits by a state government delegation led by former Sokoto State Governor and state leader of the All Progressives Congress, Senator Aliyu Wamakko.
Dinawa Families Receive Cash, Food
Families of seven people killed in Dinawa were given ₦1 million each, two bags each of maize and millet and one bag of rice. Five injured residents received ₦250,000 each and one bag each of rice, millet and maize.
Birjingo Victims Receive Assistance
In Birjingo, the families of three deceased victims received ₦1 million each. Each family also received two bags of maize, two bags of millet and one bag of rice. Six injured victims were given ₦250,000 each and one bag each of rice, millet and maize.
Gorau Boat Accident Families Supported
Channels Television reported that families representing 65 people said to have died in the Gorau boat accident received ₦1 million each. They were also presented with two bags each of maize and millet and one bag of rice. Wamakko, who conveyed Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s condolences, described the incidents as unfortunate and prayed against a recurrence.
He said the state government would continue supporting security agencies working to protect communities across Sokoto.
Police Confirmed 46 Recovered Bodies
The Gorau boat was reportedly carrying 77 passengers, including farmers, women and children, when it capsized shortly after leaving the community on Thursday, August 20, 2026.
The Sokoto State Police Command initially confirmed that 46 bodies had been recovered, 15 passengers rescued and 16 people remained missing while search operations continued.
The search-and-rescue operation involved local divers, the National Emergency Management Agency, the Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency and the police.
