As we step into a new month, I want to gently but firmly remind young lawyers of a truth that has guided my own journey: knowing yourself is one of the greatest lessons you will ever learn.
Before titles, before recognition, and before applause, there must be clarity. If you do not understand who you are, what you stand for, and where you are going, you may find yourself waiting for validation from people who are still figuring themselves out.
Self-knowledge teaches discernment. It helps you choose the right opportunities, say no when necessary, and remain grounded when the noise gets loud. Growth is not a race, comparison is a distraction, and your journey will not look like anyone else’s, and it does not need to.
When you are secure in your identity, confidence follows. With confidence comes focus, consistency, and resilience. The legal profession will test you, but knowing yourself will keep you steady through those tests.
As you move through this new month, I encourage you to invest time in self-reflection. Build competence. Develop character. Trust the process. Let your validation come from purpose, not permission.
