The Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre has arrested a 27-year-old woman, Hafsat Abubakar, over the alleged creation and circulation of a forged notice falsely claiming that OPay Nigeria Limited was shutting down operations.
Police said the investigation followed a formal petition submitted by OPay Digital Services Limited on August 31, 2026.
According to Force Public Relations Officer Anietie Iniedu, digital forensic investigators traced the disputed document to an X account allegedly operated by Abubakar. She was subsequently arrested on September 4.
The case highlights the growing criminal and commercial consequences of misinformation in Nigeria’s digital economy, particularly where fabricated documents are capable of triggering panic among customers of financial institutions.
Investigations remain ongoing, and the suspect is entitled to the presumption of innocence until otherwise determined by a court.
