87-Year-Old Arraigned for Alleged Attack on Judge

An 87-year-old man, Dahiru Garba, has been arraigned before a Chief Magistrate’s Court in Yola after allegedly attacking an Area Court judge with a cutlass during court proceedings.

Police allege that Garba attacked Hon. Dauda Hamman, Presiding Judge of the Mayo-Ine Area Court in Fufore Local Government Area of Adamawa State, on August 31.

The judge was reportedly hearing a case involving Garba and another man when the attack occurred. Police said the judicial officer was repeatedly struck on the hand and sustained grievous injuries.

Following investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department, Garba was charged with causing grievous hurt contrary to Section 219 of the Penal Code Law of Adamawa State, 2018.

Premium Times reports that he pleaded guilty when the charge was read to him. The court subsequently ordered his remand at the Yola Correctional Facility pending further proceedings.

Beyond the criminal case, the incident has intensified concern over security within Nigerian court premises and the protection of judicial officers, lawyers, litigants and court workers.
