OLAMIDE EHINFUN-ADEKUNLE, SAN, MAKES HISTORY AS YOUNGEST WOMAN TO ATTAIN SENIOR ADVOCATE RANK AT 40

Olamide Ehinfun-Adekunle has made history in Nigeria’s legal profession after becoming the youngest woman ever elevated to the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), at the age of 40.

She was among the 68 legal practitioners approved for elevation by the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) on July 23, 2026, and was formally admitted into the Inner Bar by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, on October 12, 2026, during the special session marking the commencement of the 2026/2027 Supreme Court legal year.

Born on June 25, 1986, Adekunle’s elevation has attracted attention among younger practitioners, particularly women pursuing careers in advocacy and legal practice.

Beyond the professional distinction, she has spoken about the need for reforms within Nigeria’s justice system, including reducing the volume of cases reaching the Supreme Court by making more Court of Appeal decisions final.

She has also advocated the establishment of specialised commercial divisions in state courts to facilitate the speedy determination of contractual, commercial and debt-related disputes.

On access to justice, Adekunle has called for greater public awareness of legal aid, reduced-cost legal services and pro bono opportunities to ensure that Nigerians who cannot afford private legal representation are not excluded from the justice system.

She has equally emphasised the responsibility of senior members of the profession to mentor younger lawyers, maintain professional ethics and contribute to the development of the Bar and Bench.

Her elevation is particularly significant for women in the legal profession, demonstrating that professional advancement can be achieved through sustained legal practice, competence and contribution to the administration of justice.

The 2026 cohort comprised 67 advocates and one academic. Four women were among the newly elevated practitioners.

Adekunle’s achievement adds another milestone to the growing representation of women within Nigeria’s Inner Bar.
