A Nigeria Immigration Service officer, Joseph Ali, has reportedly died after a locally manufactured firearm accidentally discharged at his residence in Abuja.
According to Naija News, the incident occurred at about 7:30 a.m. in Compensation Layout, Old Kutunku, while the officer was preparing to leave for work.
Ali had reportedly completed his preparations for duty when he picked up a locally fabricated rifle said to have been kept for security purposes within the community.
The officer allegedly intended to conceal the firearm before leaving the house but was unaware that it was still cocked.

As he attempted to lift the weapon, it reportedly discharged, sending pellets into his left eye.
A police signal obtained by Naija News stated that the rifle discharged while Ali was picking it up and that the pellets struck him in the eye.
The incident reportedly occurred in the presence of his wife and children, who were inside the residence at the time.
Following the shooting, Ali was rushed to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital for emergency medical attention.
However, efforts to save him were unsuccessful, as the attending doctor reportedly confirmed him dead upon examination.

His remains were subsequently deposited at the hospital mortuary pending an autopsy.
The police have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to the report, the case has been transferred to the Department of Criminal Investigation for further inquiry.
Investigators are expected to establish how the officer came into possession of the locally manufactured firearm, why it was kept inside the residence and the exact circumstances surrounding its discharge.
As of the time of filing this report, the Nigeria Immigration Service had not publicly issued an official statement on the officer’s death.
