IBA Puts Lawyer Influencers and Social-Media Ethics Under Scrutiny

The International Bar Association is today examining the professional risks created by lawyers’ increasing use of social-media platforms.

Its Copenhagen session on legal marketing in the digital age focuses on LinkedIn, Instagram, TikTok and other platforms used by practitioners to attract clients and build professional profiles.

Among the questions under consideration are whether lawyers should publicly discuss professional achievements, client testimonials and case outcomes; when promotion becomes misleading; and whether influencer-style content is consistent with the dignity of the profession.

The programme also raises confidentiality concerns and the risks of giving legal advice through private messages.

Social media has given individual lawyers unprecedented power to build personal brands without relying on traditional firms.

But professional rules do not disappear online.

The tension is therefore between commercial visibility and the duties of confidentiality, honesty and professional restraint.

For Nigerian lawyers, the subject is timely as legal content creators increasingly use TikTok, Instagram and other platforms to explain legal rights and attract clients.
