The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed that the immediate past Governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano, has been granted bail but remains in custody pending the fulfilment of his bail conditions.
According to Sahara Reporters, EFCC Chairman Abdulrasheed Bawa disclosed this while speaking with journalists on the sidelines of the 5th Annual General Assembly of the Network of Anti-Corruption Institutions in West Africa (NACIMA) in Abuja on Monday.
Bawa explained that although the anti-graft agency had approved Obiano’s bail, the former governor had not yet met the conditions required for his release.
“Nothing political about the arrest of the former Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano. He has been granted bail. But we await when he fulfils his bail conditions,” Bawa said.
The EFCC Chairman also dismissed claims suggesting that Obiano’s arrest was politically motivated, maintaining that the agency was acting strictly within its statutory mandate.

As reported by Sahara Reporters, Obiano was arrested last Thursday at about 8:30 p.m. at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, while preparing to travel out of the country.
He was subsequently transferred to Abuja, where EFCC operatives are investigating him over allegations involving the mismanagement of ₦42 billion and alleged contract inflation during his administration.
The Commission has yet to announce when the former governor will regain his freedom, pending the completion of the bail process and ongoing investigations.
