The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested a man from Kogi State over allegations that he impersonated an operative of the secret police and used the disguise to intimidate and extort motorists and commuters in Abuja.

According to Sahara Reporters, the suspect, identified as Moferewa Maiye from Agbajojun Village in Mopamuro Local Government Area of Kogi State, was arrested on Wednesday night around NITEL Junction along Adetokunbo Ademola Way in Wuse II, Abuja.

The report stated that Maiye was allegedly found wearing a DSS tactical uniform and carrying what investigators described as a fake pistol at the time of his arrest.

According to Sahara Reporters, the arrest followed intelligence indicating that an individual was allegedly posing as a DSS operative and using the appearance of official authority to harass members of the public and demand money from them.

Following his arrest, the suspect was taken into custody for questioning.

During interrogation, Maiye reportedly claimed that the DSS tactical uniform and other items recovered from him belonged to his late brother, Monday Maiye, whom he alleged had served with the DSS before his death.

He reportedly told investigators that he retained the uniform and related items after his brother passed away.

Security operatives are now investigating the suspect’s claims, including how he came into possession of the tactical uniform and whether it had previously been used to impersonate DSS personnel or facilitate criminal activities.

The investigation is also expected to determine the duration and extent of the suspect’s alleged activities.

The arrest comes amid growing concerns over individuals who allegedly impersonate security personnel to intimidate unsuspecting members of the public or commit criminal offences.

The DSS has repeatedly warned against the unlawful possession or use of its uniforms, insignia and operational materials, stressing that such acts undermine public trust and national security.

The allegations against the suspect remain under investigation. No court has determined his guilt, and he is presumed innocent unless proven otherwise.
