NBA Surulere Takes Lawyers Into Police Cells

Lawyers from NBA Surulere have visited four police formations under the Police Duty Solicitor Scheme, counselling detainees and pressing officers to grant bail or promptly charge suspects to court.

The Human Rights Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association, Surulere Branch, has carried out detention-monitoring visits across police formations in Lagos under the Police Duty Solicitor Scheme.

The exercise covered Bode Thomas, Aguda and Itire Divisions as well as Area C Command, Ojuelegba.

Led by Branch Vice Chairman and Human Rights Committee Chairman Cosmas Chukwuma, lawyers interacted with police officers and persons being held in custody.

Detainees were offered immediate legal counselling while police authorities were reminded of their obligations to respect constitutional safeguards governing arrest and detention.

The committee also pressed for suspects who were eligible for bail to be released or otherwise charged before a competent court.

NBA Surulere said the exercise would not be a one-off intervention and encouraged law-enforcement authorities to regard human-rights lawyers and duty solicitors as partners in the proper administration of criminal justice.
