NBA Asaba has called for an independent criminal investigation into the death of a Delta State deputy director reportedly injured during an alleged workplace assault, insisting that the constitutional rights to life and dignity demand accountability.
The Nigerian Bar Association, Asaba Branch, has demanded a diligent and independent criminal investigation into the death of Unity Ekpevbughe Adeda, a Deputy Director in the Delta State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education.
The Branch said reports indicated that Adeda allegedly sustained injuries following an incident within a government office before later dying.
Chairman of NBA Asaba, Richard Ogbolu Okonyia, said the circumstances require an investigation capable of establishing precisely what happened and determining whether any person bears criminal responsibility.
The Branch anchored its intervention on Sections 33 and 34 of the Constitution, protecting the rights to life and dignity of the human person.
NBA Asaba’s intervention is significant because the matter is moving beyond an internal workplace controversy into one potentially involving criminal liability and the State’s obligation to ensure an effective investigation into an unnatural death.
The allegations surrounding the circumstances of Adeda’s death remain subject to investigation and should not be treated as established findings against any individual. TheNigeriaLawyer
