Court Remands Man Over Fake JAMB Registrar Scam

The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered Arinze Nwogba to be remanded at Kuje Correctional Centre over allegations that he impersonated the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Prof. Segun Aina.

Justice Salim Ibrahim made the order following Nwogba’s arraignment on six counts brought by the Inspector-General of Police.

Prosecutors allege that the defendant used Prof. Aina’s identity and image on digital platforms, including WhatsApp and Truecaller, with the intention of obtaining financial advantage.

One charge alleges conduct contrary to provisions of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc.) Act.

Nwogba pleaded not guilty to all six counts. His lawyer subsequently moved an application seeking bail on liberal terms, while the prosecution opposed the request.

Justice Ibrahim fixed October 7 for ruling on bail and October 19 for commencement of trial.

The case adds to growing concern over digital impersonation of public officials and senior institutional figures, particularly where social-media profiles and messaging platforms are allegedly used to create an appearance of official authority.

No finding of guilt has been made against Nwogba.
