The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has strongly condemned the recent violent mob action perpetrated by a local vigilante group against a group of travelers along the Uromi-Obajana Road in Edo State.

According to a statement released by the Nigeria Police Force, the travelers, who were intercepted while transporting nineteen (19) locally fabricated firearms in a truck, identified themselves as hunters. However, members of the vigilante group, skeptical of their claims, accused them of being kidnappers and, without recourse to due process or proper investigation, subjected some of the individuals to unlawful mob justice. This regrettable incident resulted in tragic consequences.

In immediate response, the Edo State Police Command deployed operatives to the scene to restore order and prevent further escalation. So far, fourteen (14) suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident, and a manhunt is currently underway to apprehend others involved.

The Inspector-General reiterated the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that justice is served. He warned against any form of mob action or jungle justice, emphasizing that such acts are not only unlawful but also undermine the fundamental principles of justice and human rights.

The IGP also assured the public that a thorough investigation will be conducted, and all those found culpable will face the full weight of the law.
