As part of the NBA-YLF Justice Project 2025, the Young Lawyers Forum (YLF) Anaocha Branch has taken bold steps toward ensuring access to justice and the decongestion of correctional facilities.
On February 17, 2025, the team officially wrote to the Deputy Comptroller of the Awka Correctional Centre and followed up with a first visit to the facility.
On February 18, we were received for the second time, our request was approved, and the letter was minuted to the Head of Operations, Mr. Agba Felix.

Yesterday, February 19, we returned to the facility after securing full approval. Following a lengthy conversation with the Head of Operations, we interviewed eight (8) inmates and agreed to take up their cases. Shockingly, one of the inmates had been on remand since 2022. The cases we encountered involved charges ranging from stealing to murder.
The inmates and officers expressed immense gratitude for our commitment to facilitating the decongestion of the facility and ensuring that no one remains behind bars without access to legal representation.
At the end of the exercise, we took pictures with the Head of Operations and proceeded to strategize on the representation of our briefs. This is only the beginning, and we are determined to see these cases through.
The Anaocha Branch YLF team leading this initiative includes:
✅ Olisaeloka Onwudinjo
✅ Ucheagwu Jeffrey
✅ Ukachukwu Joachim Chimaobi
✅ Excel Ezeano
Justice must not only be done; it must be seen to be done. This is our commitment.
