Officials of the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Ibara, Abeokuta, have arrested a woman for allegedly attempting to smuggle a suspected psychoactive substance into the facility.
According to Channels Television, the woman was arrested at about 1:33 p.m. on Friday, August 28, 2026, during routine screening at the entrance to the custodial centre.
Substance Allegedly Hidden in Milo Sachet
The Ogun State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service said the suspect had arrived at the facility to visit an inmate on death row.
During the mandatory screening, correctional officers allegedly discovered a substance suspected to be “colos” concealed inside a sachet of Milo beverage powder.
While Channels Television did not identify the woman or the inmate, other reports named her as Mrs Iyabo Sowunmi and identified the death-row inmate as Dare Sowunmi, reportedly her son.
Suspect Handed Over to NDLEA
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Odukoya Olayinka, said the suspected contraband was detected during the standard security screening at the facility’s main gate.
Following the arrest, the woman was handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Controller Commends Officers
The Controller of Corrections in Ogun State, Kamoru Adesina, commended the officers involved for their vigilance and professionalism.
He reaffirmed the Service’s zero-tolerance policy towards drug trafficking and other activities capable of compromising the security of custodial facilities.
Adesina maintained that correctional centres were created for the reformation and rehabilitation of inmates and must not be allowed to become channels for the circulation of prohibited substances.
The command warned members of the public against attempting to introduce drugs or other prohibited items into custodial centres, stressing that offenders would face legal consequences.
The substance had not been publicly confirmed through laboratory analysis at the time of the report. The allegations against the woman have also not been determined by a court, and she remains entitled to the presumption of innocence.
