Court Denies Bail for Ooni’s Ex-Wife, Islamic School Principal

The Oyo State High Court in Ibadan has denied bail applications for Naomi Silekunola, estranged wife of the Ooni of Ife, and Abdullahi Fasasi, Principal of Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan.

The defendants are facing charges related to a tragic stampede that occurred during a children’s festive party in December 2024, resulting in the deaths of at least 35 children.

During the hearing on Tuesday at Court 8, Ring Road, Ibadan, Justice Olawoyin presided over the proceedings amid tight security.

The prosecution team, led by Oyo State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Prof. Oyelowo Oyewo, SAN, opposed the bail applications, arguing for additional time to complete investigations.

The court has scheduled a decision on the bail application of Oriyomi Hamzat, proprietor of Agidigbo FM, for next Tuesday.

Governor Seyi Makinde has emphasized the need for accountability in the case, asserting that all individuals involved must face trial. However, the governor clarified that he was not opposed to bail for the suspects, provided the judicial process is respected.

The high-profile case has drawn widespread attention, with tight security arrangements at the court as Nigerians await further rulings.

The prosecution’s team from the Oyo State Ministry of Justice appeared in full force, signaling the state’s commitment to pursuing justice for the victims of the tragedy.

Further proceedings are scheduled for next week.
