SERAP: The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has filed a suit against the Independent National Electoral Commission over what it describes as the Commission’s failure to disclose applicable limits on political contributions ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The action, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2114/2026, was filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
SERAP is asking the court to compel INEC to disclose whether it has exercised its statutory power under Section 91 of the Electoral Act 2026 to prescribe limits on political contributions.
Where such limits have been prescribed, the organisation is also seeking disclosure of the amounts and information on steps taken to communicate them to political parties, candidates, donors, and members of the public.
SERAP further wants information relating to party finances and the mechanisms being used to regulate political funding.
The organisation argues that transparency in political financing is important to the administration of electoral laws and public scrutiny of campaign funding.
The filing comes as preparations for the 2027 general elections intensify and disputes concerning candidate nominations, party administration, and interpretation of provisions of the Electoral Act increasingly reach the courts.
INEC will have the opportunity to respond to the claims before the Federal High Court, and the court has not yet determined the merits of SERAP’s application.
