A Lagos Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court sitting in Ikeja has sentenced Idris Ashimiyu to life imprisonment after finding him guilty of defiling an 11-year-old girl.
Justice Abiola Soladoye delivered the judgment following a trial in which the prosecution presented evidence concerning the sexual abuse of the minor.
The survivor, who was 13 years old when she testified, told the court that she was 11 at the time of the incident.
She identified the defendant as someone who carried out errands and washed cars within their residential compound.
During her testimony, she narrated how the defendant allegedly approached her, touched her inappropriately and sexually assaulted her.
The prosecution called the survivor as its witness, while the defence presented a witness who told the court that he was not present when the alleged incident occurred.
After evaluating the evidence, Justice Soladoye found the survivor’s testimony credible and coherent and held that the prosecution had established its case beyond reasonable doubt.
The court consequently convicted Ashimiyu and sentenced him to life imprisonment. It also ordered that his name be entered in the Lagos State Sexual Offenders Register.
The judgment represents an important development in the enforcement of laws protecting children against sexual violence.
It also highlights the role of specialised sexual offences courts in ensuring that cases involving vulnerable victims receive focused judicial attention.
The decision reinforces the principle that children are entitled to legal protection against sexual exploitation and abuse, and that offenders found guilty after due process must face the penalties prescribed by law.
