In her Independence Day message, Prof. Dada-Lawanson emphasized that the commemoration is not only about Nigeria’s political liberation from colonial rule, but also about the responsibility to shape the nation’s future.
“Independence Day is a call to reflection. It challenges us to ask: What are we doing today to shape the Nigeria of tomorrow? True independence is not only political, it is also economic, social, and intellectual. It is the ability of our young people to dream without limits, of women and girls to thrive without barriers, and of leaders to govern with integrity and courage,” she stated.
She called on Nigerians to recommit to building a nation anchored on justice, equity, and opportunity for all, adding that these must never remain privileges for a select few but fundamental rights for every citizen.
Quoting Nigeria’s first Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, she reminded the nation that “Nigeria is big enough to look after itself, and God willing, we shall prove this to the world.” She also invoked the words of former President Olusegun Obasanjo: “The greatness of any nation lies in its people’s ability to rise above challenges with unity of purpose.”
“As we raise our flags high today, let us also raise our hopes and our determination to move forward together. Because the greatness of Nigeria lies not in her past alone, but in the possibilities her future holds. May this Independence Day inspire us all to lead with vision, to nurture with compassion, and to believe always that progress is possible,” she concluded.
Happy Independence Day, Nigeria.
