Lagos Police Detain Four Officers Over Viral Harassment Video

The Lagos State Police Command has detained four police officers and disbanded their tactical team following the circulation of a viral video allegedly showing officers harassing a young man in the Odogunyan area of Ikorodu.

The command’s spokesperson, Superintendent of Police Abimbola Adebisi, disclosed the action on Friday, October 23, 2026, in a statement shared through the command’s official communication channel.

According to the police, the officers were attached to the Immortal Tactical Team operating in Ikorodu. The command said it began investigating the incident after receiving the video and subsequently identified the personnel involved.

The officers were summoned to the office of the Commissioner of Police, where their detention was ordered pending disciplinary proceedings.

Tactical Team Disbanded Following Investigation

The command said the decision to disband the tactical team formed part of its response to the incident.

Adebisi confirmed that all four officers were in custody, although only three were present during the briefing at which the action was disclosed.

The police said appropriate action would be taken against any personnel found guilty of misconduct following the investigation and disciplinary process.

The incident has renewed public attention on police conduct during stop-and-search operations and other interactions between law enforcement officers and members of the public.

Police Urge Public to Report Misconduct

The Lagos State Police Command urged residents to report officers who act contrary to police directives and professional standards.

It also acknowledged the role of members of the public in helping to identify the officers shown in the video.

The command’s response indicates that the matter has moved beyond public circulation of the footage to an internal disciplinary process. However, the allegations against the officers have not yet been established as findings of guilt.

Detention pending disciplinary proceedings should not be confused with a final determination that misconduct occurred. The investigation and any subsequent disciplinary process will determine the individual responsibility of the personnel involved.

Accountability and Public Confidence

The incident underscores the importance of effective oversight, transparent investigations and accountability in policing.

Police officers exercise significant powers in the course of their duties, including the authority to stop, question and investigate individuals in circumstances permitted by law. Those powers must be exercised consistently with the law, professional standards and the rights of the public.

Where allegations of abuse arise, a credible investigation is necessary both to establish the facts and to protect public confidence in law enforcement.

The Lagos Command has said it will take appropriate action against any officer found culpable. Further developments will depend on the outcome of the investigation and disciplinary proceedings.
