It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Professor Nuhu Omeiza Yaqub, a distinguished academic, visionary leader, and former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja.
Born on March 3, 1951, in Okene, Kogi State, Nigeria, Professor Yaqub dedicated his life to education, scholarship, and service to humanity. He passed away on 4-1-2025, leaving behind a legacy of excellence, humility, and impactful contributions to Nigeria’s higher education landscape.
Early Life and Education
Professor Yaqub’s academic journey began with his primary education at Nural Islamic School, Okene (1959–1965), followed by secondary education at the School for Arabic Studies, Kano (1967–1971). Demonstrating an early passion for learning, he pursued further studies at several esteemed institutions:
- Advanced Teachers College, Kano (1973–1976)
- Bayero University, Kano (1977–1980)
- University of Toronto, Canada (1982–1983)
- University of Sussex, United Kingdom (1984–1989)
- International Summer School, University of Oslo, Norway (1990)
Academic and Administrative Career
Professor Yaqub began his illustrious academic career at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, where he rose through the ranks:
- Graduate Assistant (1981–1982)
- Assistant Lecturer (1982–1986)
- Lecturer II (1986–1990)
- Lecturer I (1990–1993)
- Senior Lecturer and Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences and Administration (from 1993)
He also served as Acting Head of the Department of Political Science (1993–1997) and was an active member of the university’s Senate and Governing Council.
In 2004, Professor Yaqub was appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, where he served with distinction until 2009. Under his leadership, the institution witnessed remarkable growth and development, earning him admiration from colleagues and students alike.
Professional Affiliations and Contributions
Beyond academia, Professor Yaqub played an active role in professional and scholarly organizations. He was:
- Founding Member, Board of Trustees, and President of the Executive Board of the Society for International Relations Awareness (SIRA) from 2010 to 2020

Personal Life
Married to Moolikat Oyebola Oyetunji since 1982, Professor Yaqub was a devoted husband and father. Together, they were blessed with three children.
