Fire destroys Yobe settlement, kills woman, three children

Four members of one family have died after a fire destroyed their residence at the Rugar Audu Badali settlement in Karasuwa Local Government Area of Yobe State.

The victims were identified as Bilkisu, the wife of Mallam Bukar, and her three children, Zainab, Hafsat and Salamatu.

According to PUNCH, the fire occurred at about 5:00 p.m. on Friday, August 21, 2026, destroying the family’s residence and belongings.

The four victims were subsequently buried in accordance with Islamic rites, while the surviving members of the household were left homeless.

Yobe SEMA Assesses Destruction

The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency led an assessment and condolence visit to the affected community alongside representatives of the Karasuwa Local Government Authority and community stakeholders.

During the visit, the team documented the extent of the destruction and engaged members of the bereaved family and other residents to determine their immediate humanitarian and psychosocial needs.

The agency expressed condolences to Mallam Bukar, his surviving relatives and residents of Karasuwa Local Government Area over the tragedy.

SEMA also prayed for the repose of the deceased, asking Almighty Allah to admit them into Al-Jannatul Firdaus and grant their relatives the strength to bear the loss.

Survivors Need Emergency Shelter

The agency’s preliminary assessment established that the displaced survivors urgently required relief materials, temporary shelter and psychosocial assistance.

SEMA pledged to coordinate humanitarian interventions and mobilise resources to support the affected household.

The agency also appealed for stronger collective action to prevent similar fire outbreaks in vulnerable communities across Yobe State.

The cause of the fire had not been officially disclosed at the time of filing the report.
