NCoS Defends Bobrisky's Jail Treatment Amid Allegations

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has defended its handling of crossdresser Idris Okuneye, known as Bobrisky, during his jail term following allegations of bribery.

The NCoS Public Relations Officer, Abubakar Umar, stated that Bobrisky was given an appropriate cell after a proper evaluation. He emphasized the service’s comprehensive inmate admission process, designed to ensure the safety of all inmates and staff.

Umar also responded to claims that Bobrisky paid ₦15 million to avoid regular jail conditions, noting that the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, had set up a committee to investigate these allegations. He urged the public to await the final report of the investigation before concluding.

Bobrisky was convicted in April for mutilating the naira and served six months in jail before his release in August.

Controversy emerged when social media activist Martins Vincent Otse (aka VeryDarkMan) alleged that Bobrisky had spent his jail term in a private apartment rather than a prison cell. The NCoS has maintained that it followed due process in Bobrisky’s case.
