The Nigerian Bar Association has directed a three-member committee to examine financial records connected with the ₦100 million gift received by its Owerri Branch from the Imo State Government.
NBA President Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, constituted the committee following concerns over the receipt, management and disbursement of the money.
The panel comprises General Secretary Afam Okeke, Third Vice-President Iniobong Irene Pepple and Treasurer Esther Jimoh.
According to Premium Times, the President’s October 14 letter followed correspondence from the branch chairman and a requisition by 183 members for an Extraordinary General Meeting. The intervention was made public on October 15.
The committee will receive representations from those concerned and submit its findings and recommendations by October 30.
Relevant records, including bank statements, receipts, expenditure schedules, approvals and payment vouchers are to be preserved and made available for examination.
The panel was also assigned to represent the President at the meeting scheduled for October 15, observe proceedings and support an orderly discussion.
Badejo-Okusanya stressed that the inquiry does not establish wrongdoing against anyone. Every person whose conduct comes under scrutiny must have a fair opportunity to respond.
The next substantive development will be the committee’s verified findings. No completed investigation or final determination is announced in the material reviewed.
