The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mrs. Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, FCIArb, has constituted a three-member committee to investigate allegations of financial impropriety relating to the receipt, management and disbursement of the ₦100 million gift from the Imo State Government to the NBA Owerri Branch.

The committee comprises the NBA General Secretary, Afam Okeke; Third Vice-President, Iniobong Irene Pepple; and Treasurer, Esther Jimoh.

The President’s intervention follows concerns raised by members of the Owerri Branch and a formal requisition by 183 members for an Extraordinary General Meeting to address questions surrounding the funds.

The committee is mandated to examine relevant financial records, receive representations from the parties concerned, and submit its findings and recommendations to the NBA President on or before 30 October 2026.

As part of its assignment, the committee will attend the Extraordinary General Meeting scheduled for Thursday, 15 October 2026, at 2:00 p.m., as representatives of the NBA President. The committee’s presence is intended to enable it to observe the proceedings and support the orderly conduct of the meeting.

The President has emphasised that the constitution of the committee does not amount to a finding of wrongdoing against any person. All individuals whose conduct may be called into question will be given a fair opportunity to respond to the issues raised.

The committee is expected to review relevant financial documents, including receipts, bank statements, expenditure schedules, approvals and payment vouchers. All records relating to the gift are to be preserved pending the conclusion of the investigation.

The intervention reflects the NBA leadership’s commitment to due process, accountability and fairness in addressing concerns raised by members. The committee’s findings are expected to clarify the issues surrounding the funds, provide answers to members’ concerns and help sustain confidence in the administration of the Owerri Branch.

The NBA President has underscored the importance of an objective and impartial process, with any conclusions or recommendations firmly grounded in the evidence gathered.
