The Nigerian Bar Association has constituted a team led by Jonathan Gunu Taidi, SAN, to engage affected families and relevant authorities following the deaths in custody in Minna, Niger State.
The disclosure gives a concrete organisational direction to the association’s demand for accountability, moving its intervention towards family engagement, investigation monitoring and assistance with legal representation.
NBA President Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, announced the team in her October 12 address at the opening of the Supreme Court’s legal year.
In the address, published by Lawyard, she said the team would work with the Minna Branch to help secure representation and remedies, monitor investigations and press for accountability where responsibility is established. Any resulting prosecutions would also be monitored for fairness.
The President identified several questions requiring answers, including the identities and ages of those involved, the circumstances of their deaths and individual responsibility.
Her intervention also extended beyond detention conditions to the regulation of mining operations and the people who organise or benefit from unlawful activity.
The team’s mandate is significant for families seeking an effective route into the justice system. Legal representation can help them engage investigative processes and pursue appropriate remedies as evidence emerges.
The announcement does not establish criminal responsibility or announce a completed investigation. It identifies the Bar’s mechanism for following the matter and supporting those affected.
The next substantive developments will be the team’s verified findings, engagements with authorities and any resulting proceedings.
