NLS Leadership Dispute Takes New Turn

The leadership controversy within the Nigerian Law Society has entered a new phase after correspondence from the Inspector-General of Police’s office recognised Dahiru Aliyu and Tonye Jaja as President and Executive Director of one faction of the organisation.

The continuing leadership dispute within the Nigerian Law Society has taken a significant new turn following the publication of correspondence from the Office of the Inspector-General of Police.

The letter acknowledged Ambassador Dahiru Aliyu and Dr Tonye Clinton Jaja as President and Executive Director respectively.

The development comes amid competing claims involving an NLS structure associated with Chief J.K. Gadzama, SAN, and the organisation represented by Aliyu and Jaja.

Separately, Jaja has described their organisation as an association principally for non-litigation lawyers, including persons involved in legislative drafting, legal research, arbitration, mediation and academic work.

He also stated that the organisation agrees that Nigerian law does not recognise it as a parallel Bar association to the NBA.

That clarification is important because controversy around organisations using the term “Law Society” has previously raised questions about professional regulation, call to the Bar, rights of audience and the statutory position of the Nigerian Bar Association.
