A 41-year-old man, Adeniyi Matthew, has been arraigned before a Lagos Magistrates’ Court over the alleged rape of a 72-year-old woman.
The Times Nigeria reported on September 16 that Matthew appeared before Magistrate M.O. Tanimola of the Lagos Magisterial District on a one-count allegation of rape.
According to the charge, the alleged offence occurred on August 5, 2026, at about 2:00 p.m. in the Mosafejo area of Agbowa, Lagos State.
Police prosecutor ASP Lucky Ihehie alleged that the defendant had sexual intercourse with the 72-year-old woman without her consent. The prosecution cited Section 260 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.
The case is now a matter for the judicial process. An arraignment does not establish guilt, and the allegation against Matthew must be proved through admissible evidence before a competent court before criminal responsibility can be imposed.
The reported age of the complainant adds a significant vulnerability dimension to the case. Sexual violence involving elderly persons can be particularly under-reported because of shame, fear, dependence on others, health challenges and difficulties navigating the criminal-justice system.
Cases of alleged sexual violence also emphasise the importance of prompt medical attention, preservation of evidence, professional investigation, survivor protection and a judicial process that protects both the complainant’s dignity and the defendant’s right to a fair trial.
