The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has announced the arrest of a 34-year-old man, Dunu Bethel Ebubechukwu, in connection with an alleged attempt to ship cocaine to Saudi Arabia.
According to the NDLEA, investigators began tracking the suspect after intercepting 1.2 kilograms of cocaine concealed in phone chargers and destined for Riyadh at a Lagos courier company on July 31.
The agency said Ebubechukwu was eventually arrested during an intelligence-led operation at Article Market, opposite Trade Fair Market in Ojo, Lagos, on September 4 while allegedly operating under the cover of a herbal tea business.
NDLEA records further indicate that the suspect had previously been arrested in 2011 at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport while attempting to travel to Austria after allegedly ingesting 900 grams of cocaine and 130 grams of heroin.
He was prosecuted under the name Dunu Chukwuyenre Enoch, convicted and sentenced to five years’ imprisonment, according to the agency.
NDLEA said a subsequent search of his Ejigbo residence produced phone chargers similar to those used in the intercepted Saudi-bound consignment, with their internal components allegedly removed to create room for concealed substances.
The announcement formed part of a wider nationwide operation in which the agency reported seizures of tramadol, cannabis, methamphetamine and other controlled substances across several states.
The present allegations remain subject to investigation and any criminal proceedings that may follow.
