At least 20 people, including security personnel and civilians, have been killed after armed attackers ambushed a convoy of traders travelling under military escort to a market in Zamfara State.

The deadly attack has once again exposed the grave security challenges confronting communities in northwestern Nigeria, where residents face persistent threats from armed groups.

According to Reuters, the ambush occurred on Saturday, 10 October 2026, while the convoy was travelling from Gwashi to Nasarawa Market in Bukkuyum Local Government Area

Traders Ambushed Despite Military Escort

The convoy was reportedly moving under military protection when armed men launched their attack at approximately 2 p.m.

A local resident, Musa Danladi, who participated in recovering bodies from the scene, told Reuters that the dead included four soldiers, three police officers, one Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps officer and 12 civilians.

A military source also confirmed that 19 people sustained injuries.

The deaths of security personnel alongside the traders underscore the intensity of the confrontation and the danger faced by communities attempting to conduct ordinary commercial activities.

Questions Over Accountability and Protection

The incident highlights the need for intelligence-led operations, protection of vulnerable communities and effective investigation of mass-casualty attacks.

As of the Reuters report on 12 October, military and police authorities had not immediately responded to requests for comment on the ambush.

The identities of all those killed and the full circumstances of the attack had not been independently established in the report.
