A Magistrate’s Court in Port Harcourt has remanded two dismissed police officers over the alleged killing of Anthony Obodo, a 22-year-old whose death following a police encounter in the Ada George area of Port Harcourt triggered widespread concern.
The officers, Corporal Alfred Louis and Police Constable Michael Ejokwu, were brought before the court on a remand warrant arising from the August 27 shooting.
At the proceeding before Chief Magistrate Helen Hardy, the substantive charge was not read and no plea was taken. The court ordered the two men remanded at the Port Harcourt Correctional Centre and directed that the case file be forwarded to the Chief Registrar for reassignment.
The matter was adjourned to September 22, 2026, for further proceedings.
The development followed internal disciplinary proceedings by the Rivers State Police Command. In an official update issued on September 2, the Nigerian Bar Association stated that three officers implicated in the killing had been dismissed following an Orderly Room Trial and were expected to face criminal proceedings.
The NBA had intervened in the matter through its leadership and representatives in Rivers State, insisting that internal disciplinary sanctions should not replace the criminal justice process.
The Port Harcourt Branch of the NBA has continued to follow the case, with its leadership raising concerns over ensuring that every officer alleged to have played a role is properly brought before the law.
The case has therefore moved beyond police discipline into the more consequential question of criminal accountability and due process.
