The Nigerian Army has announced the recovery of firearms and ammunition during a security operation in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, following intelligence of a planned attack on Mwar Community in Chakfem Kingdom.

According to a statement published by Sahara Reporters, troops of Sector 8, Operation Enduring Peace, carried out the operation on Wednesday after receiving credible intelligence that suspected armed militias were planning an attack on the community.

The operation comes just days after about 23 residents of Mwar community were reportedly killed in an attack by suspected bandits, an incident that heightened security concerns in the area.

The Army stated that preliminary intelligence suggested the planned attack may have been connected to the alleged rustling of an unconfirmed number of cattle, reportedly involving some youths from the community.

To prevent further violence, troops launched a fighting patrol and conducted raids on identified locations while also searching for the missing cattle and those allegedly connected to the incident.

The military said surveillance drones and other intelligence-gathering equipment were deployed to comb nearby settlements and surrounding bush areas, although the missing cattle were not found.

According to the Army, intelligence identified Pantong Stanley and other community youths as persons of interest.

Troops subsequently raided Stanley’s residence but did not find him at home.

However, the operation led to the recovery of:

The Nigerian Army said troops, in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies, have continued targeted operations to locate other identified suspects, recover the allegedly stolen cattle and uncover any additional arms caches.

The military urged residents to remain vigilant and continue providing credible information that could assist security agencies in tackling criminal activities across the state.

It reaffirmed that Operation Enduring Peace remains committed to protecting lives and property while promoting peace and stability across Plateau State and the wider North-Central region.
