The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority has directed Air Peace to prepare a compensation package for passengers affected by the disruption of its Lagos-Enugu service after finding that passengers were incorrectly notified about the flight.
The intervention followed a complaint by human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong.
Effiong was scheduled to travel on the airline’s 6:45 a.m. Lagos-Enugu flight on Monday and said he had a court matter fixed for definite hearing in Enugu that morning.
The flight was eventually rescheduled to 4:50 p.m.
The NCAA’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Michael Achimugu, said the regulator’s preliminary investigation established that passengers should have received notification of the rescheduling but instead received a message directing them to report for the original flight.
Air Peace officials subsequently confirmed that an incorrect message had been sent.
The regulator said affected passengers should receive compensation and duty of care, with possible sanctions if applicable regulatory obligations are not met.
The case is especially relevant to legal practitioners because Effiong said other lawyers booked on the flight were also due to attend court proceedings in Enugu.
It also highlights the practical consequences of air-service disruptions and the consumer-protection obligations imposed on airlines.
