Lawyers In Business Cooperatives is stepping up its campaign for income diversification among legal practitioners as Nigeria prepares for a major Nigerian Treasury Bills auction on Wednesday, October 7, 2026.
The Central Bank of Nigeria, acting on behalf of the Federal Government’s debt-management authorities, is expected to offer ₦900 billion in Nigerian Treasury Bills, comprising ₦100 billion in 91-day bills, ₦100 billion in 182-day bills, and ₦700 billion in 364-day instruments. Settlement is scheduled for October 8.
For Lawyers In Business Cooperatives, however, the auction is being presented as more than another fixed-income exercise. The organisation is using it to advance a wider message to professionals: earned income should eventually be complemented by income generated from investments.
Akabogu SAN Among Latest Allottees
A significant addition to the cooperative’s Mass-Housing and Land-Banking Scheme is Dr. Emeka Akabogu, SAN, whom the organisation has identified among its latest allottees.
Akabogu is one of Nigeria’s respected commercial and maritime law practitioners. He is Principal Partner of Akabogu & Associates and is widely recognised for work spanning maritime, shipping, petroleum, energy, international trade and commercial law. His professional profile also reflects considerable involvement in maritime policy and the development of industry legislation. Akabogu Law Firm
A graduate of the University of Lagos, Akabogu holds an LL.M. from University College London as well as advanced maritime-law qualifications from the IMO International Maritime Law Institute in Malta. He has authored works including Maritime Cabotage in Nigeria, Ship Arrest in Nigeria and Nigerian Ports Law and Practice.
The Nigerian Bar Association Section on Business Law also recently listed Akabogu among its members elevated to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria, recognising the milestone as part of a wider celebration of professional excellence within the business-law community. NBA-SBL
His reported participation therefore brings additional visibility to an investment scheme that has, over time, attracted lawyers and other professionals interested in combining property ownership with longer-term income planning.
LegalLinkz understands that the cooperative’s current model is built around two complementary ideas: real estate capable of generating rental income, and fixed-income investments capable of generating periodic returns.
Twenty Participants to Pool ₦2.5m Each
According to information supplied by Lawyers In Business Cooperatives, the group is assembling 20 participants contributing ₦2.5 million each, creating a ₦50 million pool intended for participation in the Treasury Bills primary market.
That structure is designed to address one of the barriers faced by individual professionals who may be interested in Treasury Bills but do not have sufficient capital to participate directly at the primary-market level.
Independent market information also indicates that direct primary-auction participation typically requires substantial minimum bidding amounts, while smaller investors usually gain exposure through financial institutions, brokers, money-market funds and other investment vehicles. CheckInvestNg
Lawyers In Business Cooperatives has previously promoted pooled investment structures involving different numbers of participants contributing towards collective money-market positions. Its earlier public communications also referenced a working relationship with ARM Pension and ARM Investment Managers as part of efforts to broaden lawyers’ participation in savings, pension and money-market products.

What Investors Should Know About the October 7 Auction
The October 7 auction is significant because it is the first Nigerian Treasury Bills primary-market sale of the fourth quarter of 2026.
At the preceding September 23 auction, the stop rates were reported at 15.50 per cent for 91 days, 15.80 per cent for 182 days and 15.89 per cent for the 364-day instrument. The actual rates for October 7 will only be established after competitive bidding; investors should therefore not treat previous rates as guaranteed returns for the new auction.
Treasury Bills are short-term Federal Government debt instruments and are generally regarded as among the lower-risk naira-denominated investments because repayment represents an obligation of the Federal Government. The instruments are issued through the CBN’s auction process.
The cooperative has promoted an indicative annual return in the region of 16 to 17 per cent, but investors should note that the eventual stop rate and effective yield depend on the auction outcome, tenor, purchase price and applicable tax treatment.
That distinction is particularly important for prospective participants: an advertised or previous-market yield is not the same thing as a guaranteed future auction rate.
LIBI’s Wider Financial-Freedom Campaign
The investment drive forms part of a broader programme associated with the Lawyers In Business Institute and Lawyers In Business Cooperative Society, organisations that have for several years promoted entrepreneurship, pooled investments, property ownership and multiple income streams among members of the legal profession.
Public reports trace LIBI’s land-banking initiative to at least 2024, when the organisation described its objective as promoting group investment, knowledge-sharing and additional income streams for lawyers and other professionals.
The initiative is administered by Chief Emeka Silas Agbara, Esq., who has also served as Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association Legal Entrepreneurship Committee and has consistently advocated financial literacy, savings and investment among legal practitioners. Recent commentary attributed to Agbara describes financial freedom as the stage at which investment returns, passive income, dividends and other cash flows can meet an individual’s normal living expenses without indefinite dependence on active work.
The central message is straightforward: professional success should not end with earning fees; practitioners should also consider how legitimately accumulated income can be converted into assets capable of producing future cash flow.
As the group puts it:
“Humans are never designed to work forever. Please, learn to let the money you have worked for these years work for you.”
Mass-Housing and Land-Banking Scheme
Alongside its Treasury Bills initiative, LIBI is continuing allocations under its Mass-Housing and Land-Banking Scheme in Abuja.
The programme has been promoted for several years as an avenue through which lawyers and other professionals can acquire property, develop residential units and ultimately generate rental income. Earlier reports have documented visits and participation involving several senior members of the legal profession.
According to the latest information supplied to LegalLinkz, eight plots of different sizes remain available at the existing promotional rates, subject to availability and the scheme’s applicable terms.
The cooperative’s long-term proposition combines property and financial-market investment: acquire a plot and develop income-producing flats for tenants, while deploying another part of available capital into instruments such as Treasury Bills and money-market products.
It argues that these complementary income streams can help professionals build financial resilience and gradually reduce total dependence on active professional earnings.

For LegalLinkz, the development reflects an increasingly important conversation within the legal profession: how lawyers can move beyond earning income to deliberately building assets, retirement security, and sustainable alternative income streams.
Professionals considering any pooled investment, Treasury Bill arrangement, or property allocation should nevertheless review the governing documentation, title, custody arrangements, fees, tax implications, and exit conditions and obtain independent financial or legal advice appropriate to their circumstances.
