Imo State police shooting: The Nigeria Police Force, Imo State Command, has arrested a 23-year-old woman, Amanda Uchechi Ugo, for the alleged murder of her police lover, Corporal Cosmas Ugwu, in Ezinihitte-Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State.

The arrest was confirmed in an official press statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Command, Henry Okoye, who disclosed that the fatal incident occurred on Tuesday night within the Ezinihitte-Mbaise Police Area Command Barracks.

According to the police, operatives attached to the Area Command were alerted at about 6:32pm on Tuesday, December 26, 2023, after three gunshots were heard from within the barracks. Officers immediately mobilised and tactically moved to the source of the gunfire.

Upon arrival at the scene, police officers reportedly found Corporal Cosmas Ugwu lying helplessly on the floor of his room in a pool of blood, having sustained gunshot wounds to his chest and hand.

The injured officer was rushed to Evergreen Hospital in Ezinihitte-Mbaise for urgent medical attention, where he was later confirmed dead by a medical practitioner. His remains have since been deposited at a morgue for preservation pending further investigation.

In a swift follow-up operation, the police arrested Amanda Uchechi Ugo, a native of Umumbiri community in Ahaizu Mbaise Local Government Area, who was reportedly present at the scene of the incident. A pistol bearing breach number 5199225, said to be officially assigned to the deceased officer, was recovered from her possession.

The police spokesperson disclosed that during interrogation, the suspect made a confessional statement, admitting that the deceased was her boyfriend and that she shot him following a serious altercation between them.

“She confessed that the deceased police officer was her lover and that she shot him with the pistol during a heated dispute,” the statement said.

The Imo State Police Command further confirmed that the suspect has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Owerri, where a comprehensive investigation is ongoing. She will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
